Eleven kinds of tree across fir, spruce and pine, though the farm says its numbers are down: 'It may be a year to try a new variety!' A wagon ride, horse-drawn or tractor, takes you out to choose; shaking, wrapping and drilling happen back at the barn. The gift shop is a log cabin built from the first trees planted here.

Every saleable tree is tagged with its height, variety and price before you cut it, so you know what you are getting. Bring the tree back after Christmas and the farm chips it and hands you a certificate for a white spruce seedling to collect in May.

The whole u-cut is inside a six-acre block, an easy walk with one of the farm’s tree sleds. Cut-your-own closes at 5:30 — the farm asks you not to cut after dark, for the sake of the drip tubing and the small trees.
